Janine Benyus, on learning from nature:
I have to admit, I'm not really sure how to apply this right away. I love the concept, though. Of all the companies and products mentioned, I only knew of one: Calera, the cement manufacturer that uses carbon dioxide in flue gas from power plants to make cement.
This talk does bring to mind Steven Johnson's essay, Old Growth Media And The Future Of News. He argues (persuasively, at least to me) that the ecosystem around news is changing, and new species are thriving in this environment. We need to learn to live in it.
When building things for the web (which I sometimes do) it's probably also worth thinking about how humans act in real life, and working to support those activities online, or to mimic them. I'm actually not sure, but it's a fun way to think about web development.
